NEW DELHI: The whole nation and especially the parents of that innocent girl, Nirbhaya, finally witnessed the day after waiting for more than seven years. The four convicts of Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case are hanged to death finally on Friday, March 20th.
As the clock struck 5:30 am, people gathered outside Tihar jail and celebrated the victory that certainly was not easy. They even distributed sweets and why not? It is a day of celebration, justice is surely late but Nirbhaya will finally rest in peace. Her parents can have a sigh of relief, though the loss that they have face can never be undone and forgotten.
'Long live Nirbhaya' and 'Nirbhaya zindabad' slogans were raised by the crowd. They even carried posters that read "thanks to the judiciary" and "the morning of justice".
Nirbhaya's mother, Asha Devi, who constantly fought for the justice of her daughter, is finally relieved. She said, "I returned from the Supreme Court, hugged my daughter's photograph and told her: 'Today, justice has been delivered'. I dedicate this day -- March 20 to all the women in the country because #Nirbhaya got justice, today."
Asha Devi never regretted being a mother of a daughter who fought so bravely in something so horrific. She said, "Proud to be known as Nirbhaya's mother. She fought so hard. And I have waited long to see this day. The flaw in our justice system was exposed. But finally, all four were hanged in one go. A first of its kind of justice, which will definitely be a lesson to others."
Akshay Kumar Singh, Vinay Sharma, Mukesh Singh and Pawan Gupta were hanged to death at the scheduled time and their bodies have been sent for post-mortem to Deen Dayal Upadhayay Hospital.
Six men raped a 23-year-old girl on a moving bus on the night of 16th December 2012. While one accused was booked for juvenility and released after three years of service in a correction home, the other, Ram Singh allegedly committed suicide during his trial period.
We know we are late, Nirbhaya but also hope you are smiling somewhere. This insanity shouldn't have happened in the first place.
