COVID-19 Cases Surge To 59,138 In Italy, 5,476 dead

ROME: The deadly coronavirus pandemic continued to spread in locked-down Italy on Sunday with the total number of infected cases surging to 59,138 and deaths reaching 5,476, consistent with the newest data released by the Civil Protection Department.

Civil Protection Department Chief Angelo Borrelli, speaking at a televised news conference, confirmed that 46,638 active infections are recorded and 5,476 have died since the pandemic first broke call at northern Italy on February 21, Xinhua reported.

Of those infected, 23,783 are in isolation and, 19,846 are hospitalized and 3,009 are in intensive care, he said.

As well, a complete of 7,024 patients have recovered, said Borrelli who is additionally the national commissioner responsible for the coronavirus emergency.
