PARIS: Following the new dates of the Tokyo Olympics, the World Athletics has decided to support its decision and thus, has promised to postpone the World Athletics Championships from 2021 to 2022.
It was announced on Monday that the Tokyo Olympic Games will be staged from July 23 to 8th August, 2021 and the Tokyo Paralympic Games is now scheduled from 24th August to 5th September 2021.
In an official statement, the World Athletics said, "We support the new 2021 dates for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games announced today by the Japanese organizers and the IOC (International Olympic Committee). This gives our athletes the time they need to get back into training and competition. Everyone needs to be flexible and compromise and to that end, we are now working with the organizers of the World Athletics Championships in Oregon on new dates in 2022 for our World Athletics Championships"
As the World Championships are scheduled to be held from August 6 to 15, 2021, the new dates of the Tokyo Olympics will not allow them to take place as originally planned.
"We would like to thank our Oregon 2021 Organizing Committee, their stakeholders and our partners for their collaboration and willingness to explore all options," the statement said further. They also said that they are in discussions with the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games Federation as both these events are scheduled for 2022.
