On Saturday, former finance minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram took to his official Twitter handle to urge several chief ministers to remind Prime Minister Narendra Modi that saving the “livelihood of the poor” is as important as fighting the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.
Tagging various chief ministers, the Rajya Sabha member tweeted: “Chief Ministers - @capt_amarinder @ashokgehlot51 @bhupeshbaghel @VNarayanasami @uddhavthackeray @EPSTamilNadu should tell the Prime Minister today that just as LIVES are important LIVELIHOOD of the poor is important."

He said that even as the country fights the coronavirus crisis, the government must do something for the poor of the country who have lost their jobs due to the 21-day nationwide lockdown. Chidambaram reminded that many are going hungry and standing in long lines for food because they have exhausted their meagre savings.
“The poor have lost their jobs or self-employment in the last 18 days. They have exhausted their meagre savings. Many are standing in line for food. Can the State stand by and watch them go hungry?” Chidambaram posted.
He asked the CM's to demand that cash be transferred to every poor family immediately. ‘Remonetise the poor’ should be their unanimous demand."
The novel coronavirus is spreading at an alarming rate in the country even as the 21-day lockdown period nears its end. So far, India has reported 7,447 COVID-19 cases, of which 6,565 are active cases. 239 people have died and 642 have recovered.
