NEW DELHI:  Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party founder Ram Vilas Paswan met more than 50 MPs of the SC/ST communities at his residence after the opposition demanded reservation in promotions for the SCs, STs and OBCs in government jobs.

Six Union Ministers, including Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawarchand Gehlot, were also present during the meeting. MPs cutting across party lines attended the meeting.

Sources said that the MPs will form a future strategy into the matter following the decision of the Supreme Court.

Last week, a two-judge bench of the top court ruled the states are not bound to provide reservation in appointments. Also, there is no fundamental right to claim quota in promotions.

Earlier in the day, Gehlot told Rajya Sabha that the central government is committed to the welfare of people from Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Other Backward Class (OBC).
