Hong Kong is safe despite disruptions in certain areas, says govt

The protests in Hong Kong that disturbed almost the whole world has finally settled down but the government said that these protests which started in June have not affected business or security in the city.

In a letter sent to foreign consulates in Hong Kong, Commerce and Economic Development Secretary Edward Yau said that “Hong Kong remains safe and business activities continue as normal despite the occasional inconvenience and disruptions in certain areas.”

“The Hong Kong Government will continue to uphold law and order and good governance. We will continue to uphold the freedoms so proudly protected here, including our freedom of the press and demonstration,” the statement added.

The protesters have rocked Hong Kong with the violent protest which includes uses of firearms as well but the government official denied of having any harm to business and security.

Thousands of protesters swarmed up in the international airport premises and stopped all the major proceedings. several international, as well as domestic flights, were stopped and government buildings and other public places were destroyed.

The demonstrations began in opposition to the proposed extradition law that could have allowed Beijing access to "fugitives" taking refuge in Hong Kong territory.

Protesters this demand was accepted by the government but there were other four demands which are yet to be fulfilled.

Earlier, Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam on Wednesday withdrew extradition bill that created months of protests across the city. sparked months of protests across the special administrative region.

"The government will formally withdraw the bill in order to fully allay public concerns," Chief Executive Carrie Lam said.

"The secretary for security will move a motion according to the rules of procedure when the Legislative Council resumes," she added.

Demands of Protesters

1. Complete withdrawal of the proposed extradition bill from the legislative process (as opposed to suspension)

2. Retraction of the characterization of the protests as "riots"

3. Release and exoneration of arrested protesters

4. Establishment of an independent commission of inquiry into police behavior

5. Universal suffrage for Legislative Council and Chief Executive elections
