The multi-million dollar company, Facebook has revealed that it shall pay $550 million in order to liquidate the lawsuit filed on the company because of the use of their facial recognition feature. A user hailing from Illinois sued the social networking site as it violates the state's privacy law.

The case came to notice dud to Tag Suggestion, a feature that helps label pictures of the users by suggesting their names. As per the 'Biometric Privacy Law' in the state, the gathering of facial data for tag suggestion without seeking the user's permission and without informing for how long the data will be kept is illegal. Facebook attempted to justify this practice by claiming that these allegations have "no merit".

For the settlement, the company will have to pay $550 million to the affected Illinois users along with the legal fees of the plaintiffs.

A representative of Facebook also gave a statement regarding the ongoing case where he said, " We decided to pursue a settlement as it was in the best interest of our community and our shareholders to move past this matter."
