MUMBAI: The co-operative dairy company, Amul is known to use topical affairs in its cartoon ads. However, one of the recently featured ads from the company has created quite a stir amongst the people and they are outraged. The ad is regarding the latest Oscar ceremony of 2020 where Joaquin Phoenix won the ‘Best Actor’ award. It showcases the Amul girl feeding butter to the Oscar winner as he stands while holding the award in one of his hands.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, most commonly known as PETA, along with thousands of Twitter users weren’t too impressed with how the ad was presented. This is because, Joaquin Phoenix is vegan (person who doesn’t consume or use animal products) as well as an environmentalist, animal rights advocate along with being an actor. His Oscar acceptance speech was also mainly focussed on making a better tomorrow and to give up consuming dairy.

“We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow and steal her baby, even though her cries of anguish are unmistakable. Then, we take her milk that's intended for her calf and we put it in our coffee and our cereal. We fear the idea of personal change, because we think we need to sacrifice something; to give something up. But human beings at our best are so creative and inventive, and we can create, develop and implement systems of change that are beneficial to all sentient beings and the environment,” Joaquin mentioned in his speech.

Shortly after Amul posted its ad, PETA came soon to slam it with a comeback. The official Twitter handle of ‘PETA India’ made the following tweet:

Many avid fans and environmentalists also took the opportunity to school Amul over its insensitivity and lack of research over the issue.
