Golden Globe 2020 Winners List, Fleabag and 1971 Win Big

The television and film fraternity of Hollywood came together to celebrate the best work from the industry from the year 2019 at the 77th Golden Globe Awards. The awards took place at Beverly Hills and was broadcasted live on 5th January 2020. It was comedian Ricky Gervais’ 5th time hosting the ceremony.

Shows and films which were produced by the streaming service of Netflix were leading the nominations with a total of 37 nominations in TV and film category combined. The film ‘Marriage Story’ stood tall with a total of 6 categories, while ‘The Irishman’ and ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ had 5 nominations each. The dark psychological thriller ‘Joker', also had 4 nominations.

Tables surely turned when ‘1917’, the epic war drama managed to have two big wins out of the 3 categories it was nominated in. The categories being ‘Best Picture – Drama’ and ‘Best Director’ for Sam Mendes. Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio starrer ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ also won ‘Best Picture – Musical or Comedy.’ While Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) and Renée Zellweger (Judy) were declared the best actors in the drama category, Taron Egerton (Rocketman) and Awkwafina (The Farewell) won in the Best Actor/Actress in a Musical or Comedy category. Brad Pitt (Once Upon A Time In Hollywood) and Laura Dern (Marriage Story) managed to win ‘Best Supporting Role.’

As far as Television is concerned, Succession, Fleabag and Chernobyl were major winners by getting 2 awards each. While Succession won for ‘Best TV Series – Drama’, ‘Fleabag’ was declared the best comedy series. Brian Cox (Succession) and Olivia Coleman (The Crown) won best actors in the drama category as Ramy Youssef (Ramy) and Phoebe-Waller Bridge (Fleabag) won for Best Actor/Actress in a Comedy or Musical.
